Description
Posterior torso anatomy is presented with a transparent overlay localizing the liver in a large-bodied adult Black male. The right lobe occupies the right upper quadrant beneath the diaphragm, sitting inferior to the right lung base and extending medially toward the left lobe across the epigastrium. Along the inferomedial surface, the fossa for the gallbladder creates a clear indentation, while the stomach lies anteromedial to the left lobe and the intestinal loops occupy a more inferior, central abdominal position. Surface context matters. Topographic liver anatomy becomes harder to teach and to estimate clinically in obesity, where thicker subcutaneous tissue and a low-costal margin reduce the reliability of palpation and percussion. A posterior, body-referenced view helps orient the organ to the lower ribs and upper lumbar region, which is useful when correlating right upper quadrant pain to gallbladder disease and when explaining why ultrasound windows can be limited by increased soft tissue depth. The gallbladder fossa remains a key landmark when discussing cholelithiasis, acute cholecystitis, and referred pain patterns that can track to the right scapular region. Use this asset in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to reinforce hepatic position relative to thoracoabdominal landmarks, and in patient-facing or public health materials addressing obesity-associated liver disease such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
