Shown within an upright African adult male torso, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant immediately inferior to the right hemidiaphragm and deep to the costal margin, with its inferior border coursing obliquely toward the epigastrium. The falciform ligament divides the hepatic surface into right and left anatomical lobes, tracking toward the anterior abdominal wall and superiorly toward the diaphragmatic surface. Medially, the left lobe extends across the midline toward the left hypochondrium, while the bulk of hepatic parenchyma remains right-sided. Proportions matter. Teaching liver topography on a full-body figure helps anchor clinical localization: right upper quadrant tenderness, hepatomegaly, and hepatic capsular stretch pain are interpreted differently once you appreciate how far the right lobe projects under the ribs in a neutral standing posture.
