Description
Anteriorly, the olfactory nerves (cranial nerve I) appear as numerous fine fila olfactoria descending from the olfactory bulb and tract region and traversing the cribriform plate of the ethmoid to reach the superior nasal cavity. Each small fascicle courses inferiorly through individual foramina, then disperses across the olfactory mucosa along the roof of the nasal cavity and superior nasal concha. Superior to these filaments lie the olfactory bulbs, while the nasal septum sits medially and the lateral nasal wall provides the lateral boundary for the arborizing nerve fibers. Small, repeated bundles dominate the field. This angle matters because it matches the anatomical route most vulnerable in shear injury. Rapid deceleration and anterior skull base trauma can avulse the fila at the cribriform plate, producing immediate anosmia and raising concern for an associated cerebrospinal fluid leak from an ethmoid roof fracture. For endoscopic endonasal surgery, the anterior relationship of the olfactory mucosa to the cribriform plate and superior turbinate helps explain why septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and anterior skull base approaches can compromise smell when dissection strays too superiorly or medially. Use this plate when you need to teach the special sensory pathway from olfactory receptor neurons (axons) to bulb, clarify why cranial nerve I is anatomically distinct from other cranial nerves, or illustrate the mechanism of post-traumatic anosmia in a neurology or ENT module.
