Description
Olfactory nerve filaments (fila olfactoria) ascend from the olfactory mucosa through the foramina of the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone to synapse in the olfactory bulb, which rests immediately superior to the anterior cranial fossa. From the posterior aspect of the bulb, the olfactory tract courses posteriorly along the inferior surface of the frontal lobe toward the olfactory trigone and anterior perforated substance. Laterally, the tract and bulb sit medial to the orbital roof and superior to the nasal cavity. Fine anatomy, seen in profile. A lateral perspective clarifies the precarious relationship between the olfactory bulb, cribriform plate, and frontal lobe, the exact interface injured in anterior skull base trauma with cribriform fractures and post-traumatic anosmia.
