Description
Anterior body surface anatomy of an obese adult male is presented with the esophagus and stomach overlaid in red to indicate organ position. The esophagus descends in the midline from the cervical region through the thorax and crosses the diaphragm at the esophageal hiatus to join the stomach at the cardia in the left upper quadrant. The stomach occupies the epigastrium and left hypochondrium, with the fundus projecting superiorly and laterally beneath the left costal margin, the body continuing inferomedially toward the antrum, and the pylorus narrowing toward the midline near the transpyloric plane. Clear landmarks. Obesity changes the way surface anatomy reads, and this view makes that practical: the stomach’s greater curvature can sit more inferiorly, and a large left lobe of the liver or increased visceral fat can obscure palpation-based teaching points.
