Description

Arising from the lacrimal artery within the superolateral orbit, the zygomatic branch courses laterally along the orbital wall toward the zygomatic bone, typically in company with the zygomatic nerve as it approaches the zygomatico-orbital foramina. From an anterior perspective, the orbital rims, zygomatic bone, maxilla, and frontal bone frame the vessel’s path, while deeper cervical and facial vessels remain visible in the background. Inferior to the orbit, the maxilla and mandibular landmarks orient the viewer to midface depth, and superiorly the frontal region provides context for the artery’s origin from the ophthalmic circulation. Understanding this branch matters when teaching orbital blood supply beyond the central retinal artery and posterior ciliary arteries, because the zygomatic branch participates in anastomoses between the lacrimal artery and the superficial temporal or facial systems through zygomaticotemporal and zygomaticofacial channels. Small vessel, big consequences. In lateral orbitotomy, midface fracture patterns involving the zygoma, or dissection near the lacrimal gland, this vessel can explain brisk bleeding in the superolateral orbit and provides a named landmark for correlating surgical planes with vascular risk. Educators can drop this plate directly into head and neck anatomy courses, ophthalmology and oculoplastics teaching files, or atlas chapters on the ophthalmic artery and its lacrimal branches, where students need a clean anterior reference for the orbit’s lateral wall. It also supports clinical graphics for zygomatic complex fractures, orbital decompression, and procedural consent materials that require accurate orbital vasculature in relation to the skull base, neck carotids, and upper thorax.
