Description
Arising from the lacrimal artery within the lateral orbit, the zygomatic branch courses anteriorly along the lateral orbital wall toward the zygomatic bone and lateral orbital rim. In lateral profile, it lies deep to the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and adjacent to the zygomaticofrontal region, with the globe and orbital contents positioned anteromedially. Portions of the calvaria, maxilla, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae provide bony context, while companion arterial and venous channels track superiorly in the temporal region and inferiorly through the neck. For orbital and periorbital surgery, this small vessel matters out of proportion to its caliber. Dissection near the lateral canthus, lateral orbitotomy, and fixation of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures can encounter the zygomatic branch or its anastomoses with superficial temporal and infraorbital territories, creating bleeding that obscures the operative plane along the lateral orbital rim. It also helps teach the concept that the orbit’s blood supply is not an isolated end-arterial system, but part of a dense collateral network between the internal carotid system (via the ophthalmic artery) and external carotid branches. Small vessel, real consequences. Educators can pair this lateral view with craniofacial osteology to anchor lectures in head and neck anatomy, ophthalmic anatomy, or maxillofacial surgical approaches, where spatial relationships around the zygomatic bone are often mislearned in axial-only diagrams.
