Cut through a sagittal section of the adult male skull, the superolateral orbit is opened to follow the lacrimal nerve as it courses anteriorly along the lateral wall of the orbit toward the lacrimal gland. Superiorly, the frontal bone forms the orbital roof while the zygomatic bone contributes laterally, and the globe sits anterior to the optic canal with the optic nerve (CN II) projecting posteriorly from the sclera. Extraocular muscles bracket the eyeball, with the lateral rectus positioned lateral to the optic nerve and the superior rectus superior to the globe, creating clear planes for appreciating how small sensory branches traverse the periorbita. Portions of the nasal cavity and maxilla appear inferior and medial to the orbit in the same section. Following the lacrimal nerve in lateral perspective matters because its anatomy links orbital pain patterns to trigeminal sensory pathways and clarifies where iatrogenic injury can occur during superolateral orbitotomy or lacrimal gland surgery.
