Seen in lateral sagittal section, the globe sits within the bony orbit with the optic nerve (cranial nerve II) leaving the posterior pole and running posteriorly toward the orbital apex, where it aligns with the optic canal in the lesser wing of the sphenoid. Extraocular muscles hug the sclera anteriorly and laterally, while deeper in the apex you can infer the course of the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves as they converge on the muscles they innervate. Medial to the orbit, the nasal cavity and septum occupy the midline space, and inferiorly the maxillary sinus forms an air cell beneath the orbital floor, clarifying the close vertical relationship between the orbit, paranasal sinuses, and upper dentition. A lateral sectional view like this earns its keep when you need to teach the tight anatomy of the orbital apex.
