Description
Oriented in a lateral cutaway of the male orbit, the lacrimal nerve is traced as a slender branch of the ophthalmic division (V1) running along the superior margin of the lateral rectus muscle toward the lacrimal gland in the superolateral orbital fossa. Superior and inferior recti, medial and lateral recti, and the superior and inferior oblique muscles frame the globe, while the optic nerve exits the posterior pole toward the optic canal. Additional orbital nerves appear in yellow, consistent with the oculomotor nerve to multiple extraocular muscles, the trochlear nerve to the superior oblique, and the abducens nerve entering the lateral rectus on its medial surface. Red and blue vessels course over the sclera and within the orbital soft tissues, set against the bony orbit and adjacent nasal cavity. Clinically, this view clarifies why reduced tearing and sensory loss over the lateral upper eyelid can accompany lesions affecting V1 branches at the orbital apex or within the lateral orbit, including trauma and surgical manipulation near the lateral rectus and lacrimal gland. The lacrimal nerve also serves as a pathway for postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion that hitchhike via the zygomatic nerve (V2), a relationship that explains lacrimation deficits in proximal trigeminal or pterygopalatine pathology. A small nerve, but a revealing landmark.
