Description
Seen in profile within a sectioned male skull, the globe sits in the orbit with the sclera, cornea, iris, and pupil oriented anteriorly, while the optic nerve (cranial nerve II) exits the posterior pole of the eyeball at the optic disc and courses posteriorly toward the optic canal. Surrounding bony boundaries of the orbital cavity are opened by the cranial section, exposing cortical and trabecular bone and the tight confines around the orbital apex. Along the proximal segment of the nerve, the dural sheath is shown with the central retinal artery piercing the meningeal coverings to enter the nerve before continuing toward the retina. Spatially, this highlights how quickly the neurovascular bundle transitions from an intraorbital to intracanalicular relationship. That dural penetration point matters in the clinic. Compression within the optic canal from sphenoid fractures, canalicular meningioma, or orbital apex syndrome can compromise axoplasmic flow and the central retinal vessels, producing abrupt vision loss that may precede overt funduscopic changes. The meningeal continuity of the optic nerve sheath also explains papilledema in raised intracranial pressure, and this cutaway makes the subarachnoid space around the nerve easier to teach than a standard surface view.
