Description

Anterior vertebral bodies of a short spinal segment are presented in anatomical position, with intervertebral discs interposed as pale fibrocartilaginous cushions between adjacent superior and inferior endplates. A single vertebral body at mid-level shows loss of anterior height with a transverse fracture line across the centrum, creating a wedge configuration when compared with the intact vertebrae above and below. Disc spaces remain identifiable, and the anterior cortical margin of the injured vertebra appears buckled relative to the smoother anterior surfaces of neighboring bodies. Compression fractures of the vertebral body most often load and fail the anterior column, so an anterior perspective makes the degree of wedging and collapse easy to judge and ties directly to the mechanism of flexion injury. In adult males this pattern is classic after an axial load with forward flexion (fall from height, motor vehicle collision), but it also serves as a teaching contrast to osteoporotic insufficiency fractures, where minor trauma can yield similar anterior height loss. Subtle differences matter: progressive anterior collapse raises concern for evolving kyphosis and chronic pain, while posterior wall involvement suggests a burst component with potential retropulsion toward the spinal canal and a different management pathway.
