Description
Presented in anatomical position from an anterior perspective, the thoracic cage and upper abdomen frame the domed diaphragm as it spans the inferior thoracic aperture. Muscular fibers arise peripherally from the costal margin, lower ribs, and xiphoid region and converge medially onto the broad central tendon, which sits immediately inferior to the fibrous pericardium. Superiorly, the diaphragm’s contour relates to the inferior margins of the lungs and pleura, while its peripheral attachments blend laterally with the inner surfaces of the ribs and intercostal spaces. Intercostal muscles are also emphasized between adjacent ribs, reinforcing the shared respiratory mechanics of rib elevation and diaphragmatic descent. Clinically, an anterior diaphragm view clarifies why the phrenic nerve (C3 to C5) is the motor supply you protect during cardiothoracic and mediastinal procedures and why diaphragmatic paralysis produces a raised hemidiaphragm on chest radiography and reduced ventilation on the affected side.
