Description
Across the anterolateral abdominal wall, the paired external oblique muscles spread inferiorly from the outer surfaces of the lower ribs toward the linea alba and iliac crest, their fibers running inferomedially in the classic “hands-in-pockets” direction. Medially, a broad external oblique aponeurosis contributes to the anterior rectus sheath and meets its counterpart at the midline. Inferiorly, the aponeurotic edge thickens to form the inguinal ligament, spanning from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle and defining the superficial plane of the groin. This anterior perspective matters because it clarifies how the external oblique transitions from muscular slips on the costal margin to a sheet-like aponeurosis that helps form the inguinal canal region, where abdominal wall weakness can manifest as an indirect or direct inguinal hernia.
