Description
Across the anterolateral abdominal wall, the paired external oblique muscles occupy the superficial layer, their fascicles running inferomedially from the lower ribs toward the linea alba, forming the classic “hands-in-pockets” direction. Superiorly, the digitations interdigitate with the serratus anterior along ribs 5 to 12, while inferior fibers converge into a broad aponeurosis that contributes to the anterior rectus sheath and spans toward the pubic crest. Along the lower margin, the aponeurosis thickens as the inguinal ligament from anterior superior iliac spine to pubic tubercle, lying superficial to the deeper internal oblique and transversus abdominis. Fiber direction matters here. The external oblique aponeurosis forms the superficial inguinal ring and anterior wall of the inguinal canal, so this anterior surface anatomy links directly to indirect and direct inguinal hernia patterns and to surgical landmarks during open hernia repair. Because the muscle is superficial and broad, it also frames common incision and trocar trajectories on the abdomen, and it explains why lateral trunk rotation strains often localize near the costal margin or along the iliac crest.
