Description

Centered on the lower third of the face, the inferior labial artery branches from the facial artery near the modiolus and runs medially within the lower lip, closely paralleling the vermilion border deep to orbicularis oris. Superficial facial veins track nearby, and the relationship to the facial artery as it ascends along the anterior border of the masseter toward the angle of the mouth is made clear. Bony landmarks such as the mandible, maxilla, and dentition provide orientation, while the masseter, temporalis, and perioral mimetic muscles frame the vascular course in an anterior, bilateral head and neck view. For lip and oral cavity procedures, this arterial path is where bleeding becomes brisk and hard to control. Local anesthetic infiltration, lower-lip laceration repair, and wedge excisions for vermilion lesions often intersect the inferior labial artery as it anastomoses with its contralateral counterpart across the midline, and its proximity to the labial glands and orbicularis oris explains why deep sutures can catch it. The illustration also supports teaching of facial artery variability and the surface landmark of the facial artery pulse just anterior to the masseter. A small vessel with outsized consequences. Use it in head and neck anatomy modules, oral and maxillofacial surgery teaching files, and plastic surgery references discussing lip reconstruction and vermilion alignment. It also fits clinical skills materials on hemostasis in facial soft tissue trauma and safe injection planes around the oral commissure. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
