Description
Running along the anteromedial knee, the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve is traced as it leaves the adductor canal region and courses superficially toward the patellar ligament, passing just inferior to the patella and over the medial tibial condyle. Surrounding landmarks include the distal femur, patella, tibial tuberosity, and proximal tibia and fibula, with the quadriceps tendon superior to the patella and the patellar ligament extending inferiorly to its tibial insertion. Medial soft tissue planes are suggested by the sartorius and vastus medialis contours, while more distal anterior compartment structures and the dorsum of the foot provide orientation along the leg’s longitudinal axis. This view matters because the infrapatellar branch is a common source of postoperative anterior knee pain and numbness after procedures that cross the anteromedial portal zone, including knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction graft harvest, and total knee arthroplasty midline or parapatellar approaches. Its superficial, variable course makes it vulnerable where the nerve crosses the patellar tendon and emerges from under sartorius fascia, producing painful neuroma or dysesthesia over the inferomedial patella.
