Description
Across the anterior thoracic wall, the internal intercostal muscles occupy the intercostal spaces deep to the external intercostals and superficial to the innermost intercostals and endothoracic fascia. Their fibers course obliquely from the inferior border of a rib to the superior border of the rib below, running inferoposteriorly relative to the anterior midline. Near the costal cartilages, the muscular slips give way to the internal intercostal membrane, while the intercostal neurovascular bundle lies in the costal groove along the inferior margin of each rib. Functionally, this anterior view matters because the internal intercostals act primarily in forced expiration by depressing the ribs and stiffening the intercostal spaces, and their membranous anterior portions help maintain chest wall integrity where muscular fibers are scant.
