Description
Across the anterior thoracic wall, the external intercostal muscles occupy the intercostal spaces between adjacent ribs, their fibers coursing infero-anteriorly from the inferior border of one rib to the superior border of the rib below. From this perspective, the sternum and costal cartilages sit medially, while the rib arcs sweep laterally toward the costal angles; the external intercostals are most apparent in the lateral and anterolateral spaces where they are muscular, thinning toward the parasternal region. A transparent body outline frames the skeletal landmarks in anatomical position. Ribs are emphasized. Because the fiber direction is shown clearly, this view is useful for teaching how the external intercostals elevate the ribs and expand the thoracic cage during quiet inspiration, and why their action differs from the internal intercostals, whose fibers run roughly perpendicular.
