Description
Centered on the anterior knee, the patella (kneecap) sits superficial to the distal femur, its rough, slightly convex anterior surface facing forward while its superior base blends into the quadriceps tendon and its inferior apex continues as the patellar ligament toward the tibial tuberosity. Proximal to the patella, the quadriceps tendon crosses the suprapatellar region and aligns with the femoral trochlear area deep to it. Distally, the patellar ligament runs in the midline to the anterior tibia, framing the patellofemoral portion of the extensor mechanism. Articular cartilage is suggested on the opposing joint surfaces where the patella tracks against the femur, while the tibial plateau lies inferior and posterior to the patellar ligament. Anterior patellar anatomy matters because most anterior knee pain complaints and many sports injuries localize to the extensor apparatus and patellofemoral joint. Maltracking over the femoral trochlea, chondromalacia patellae, and tendinopathy at the inferior pole (jumper’s knee) are common clinical correlates, and this view keeps attention on the palpable bony landmarks used in examination.
