Description
Frontal anatomy of the second thoracic vertebra (T2) centers on the vertebral body, broad and weight bearing, with the superior and inferior costal demifacets set on its posterolateral margins for articulation with the head of the second rib and the adjacent rib. Superiorly, the body meets the endplate and the pedicles, which project posteriorly to frame the anterior boundary of the vertebral foramen. Laterally, the transverse processes extend from the vertebral arch, and in a true anterior view their costotransverse facets sit just lateral to the pedicle-root region. Spinous and articular processes remain posterior and are largely obscured from this perspective. T2 matters because it sits at the cervicothoracic junction where thoracic kyphosis begins and rib-bearing morphology becomes obvious, a frequent point of confusion when learners toggle between cervical and thoracic patterns. The costal demifacets are the landmark that anchors rib counting on skeletal specimens and cross-sectional imaging, and fractures or lytic lesions of the T2 vertebral body can be clinically relevant in high-energy trauma or metastatic disease with canal compromise.
