Description
Centered in the palm, the superficial palmar venous arch curves transversely across the distal carpal row and proximal metacarpals, mirroring the course of the superficial palmar arterial arch shown in red. Digital palmar veins and small venules converge from the fingers into a superficial venous plexus, then drain proximally toward the wrist into the superficial venous channels accompanying the radial and ulnar sides of the hand. Beneath the vessels, the bony framework is rendered with the carpal bones proximally, metacarpals in the mid-hand, and proximal, middle, and distal phalanges aligned distally. Relationships read left to right in anatomical position, with the thumb (pollex) on the radial side and the little finger on the ulnar side. Clear landmarks. Anterior (palmar) venous anatomy matters when you are planning incisions, flap elevation, or cannulation sites in hand surgery, because superficial veins can be the first structures encountered during palmar approaches and may complicate exposure if they are not anticipated. This view also supports teaching the distinction between superficial palmar drainage and the deep palmar venous arch that accompanies the deep palmar arterial arch, a separation that becomes clinically relevant in crush injury, replantation, and postoperative venous congestion. The arch pattern helps orient the clinician to where tributaries from the common palmar digital veins coalesce.
