Description
Petrotympanic fissure (Glaserian fissure) lies on the anterior aspect of the temporal bone, immediately posterior to the articular tubercle and at the anterior margin of the mandibular (glenoid) fossa. From this fixed anterior viewpoint, the slit-like cleft is appreciated between the tympanic part and the petrous portion, with the squamous part contributing superiorly toward the root of the zygomatic process. Nearby landmarks that typically frame the region include the anterior wall of the external acoustic meatus laterally and the smooth articular surface of the mandibular fossa medially. Small space, big relevance. Clinically, the petrotympanic fissure is a recognized conduit between the tympanic cavity and the infratemporal fossa, transmitting the chorda tympani nerve as it exits the middle ear to join the lingual nerve, and also carrying the anterior ligament of the malleus and accompanying vascular twigs. That relationship matters when correlating altered taste and xerostomia after middle ear disease or surgery, and it is also a useful landmark in anterior approaches around the temporomandibular joint where the capsule, articular eminence, and adjacent temporal bone are at risk. The anterior perspective clarifies the fissure’s position relative to the articular tubercle, reducing the common student error of confusing it with irregularities around the mandibular fossa or with sutural lines of the temporal region.
