Description
Centered in an anterior view, the third thoracic vertebra (T3) is highlighted within the stacked thoracic vertebral column, with the T2–T3 and T3–T4 intervertebral discs immediately superior and inferior to its vertebral body. The vertebral body appears kidney shaped, broader transversely than anteroposteriorly, and aligned in the midline between the adjacent vertebral bodies above and below. Lateral to the body, the pedicles begin the neural arch, and the transverse processes project posterolaterally, their anterior aspects only partly appreciated from this perspective. Orientation at T3 matters because it sits near the superior thoracic inlet transition and anchors common surface and imaging landmarks used to count levels in the upper thorax.
