Description
Running up the anterior thorax and neck, the superficial and deep venous pathways converge toward the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava, with the subclavian veins coursing horizontally beneath the clavicles and the internal jugular veins descending medial to the sternocleidomastoid region. Over the shoulder girdle, the axillary vein continues proximally as the subclavian, while more superficial channels track in the subcutaneous plane across the pectoral region. Bony landmarks of the skull, ribs, sternum, and humeri anchor the vessels in anatomical position. Orientation is immediate. An anterior projection of the upper body veins matters when you need to map venous return to the right atrium and teach where central access devices actually sit in relation to the clavicle, first rib, and mediastinum. It also supports discussion of superior vena cava syndrome, in which obstruction from malignancy or thrombosis drives venous hypertension and recruitment of collateral pathways across the anterior chest wall.
