Description
Positioned deep in the posterior forearm, the paired anterior interosseous veins course along the anterior surface of the interosseous membrane between radius and ulna, visible through the osseous framework in this posteriorly oriented rendering. They ascend proximally from the distal antebrachium toward the cubital region, running with the anterior interosseous artery and in close relationship to the deep flexor compartment. Radius lies lateral (thumb side) and ulna medial, with the interosseous venous channel tracking the interval between them. Small venules from the carpus and deep palmar region contribute distally. Appreciating these veins from a posterior perspective helps clarify how a vessel named anterior can still be best taught through the dorsal window once the interosseous membrane and bony borders are used as landmarks. This is the deep venous pathway that communicates with the ulnar venae comitantes and participates in collateral outflow when superficial veins are compromised. A key teaching point for trainees: anterior interosseous syndrome affects the anterior interosseous nerve, but the accompanying artery and veins help you localize the neurovascular bundle along the membrane when planning anterior forearm exposure or interpreting postoperative swelling and hematoma tracking.
