Description
Beneath a partially transparent dermal layer of the male midface, the zygomaticus major is emphasized as a paired, oblique strap coursing inferomedially from the zygomatic (malar) bone toward the oral commissure. Its fibers lie superficial to the buccinator and deep to the subcutaneous fat, tracking across the lateral cheek toward the modiolus at the angle of the mouth. Nearby mimetic muscles in the same plane, such as the zygomaticus minor and portions of the orbicularis oris, provide immediate orientation around the nasolabial region. Skin, beard hair, and surface contours remain visible as a realistic overlay. Clinically, this muscle defines the vector of smile elevation and is a key landmark when mapping facial nerve function, since the zygomatic and buccal branches innervate the midfacial mimetic musculature and can be affected in Bell palsy or after parotid and facelift procedures. Surgeons and injectors also track this line when planning approaches to the nasolabial fold and modiolus, because asymmetry often reflects altered tone or scarring along the zygomaticus major’s pull rather than a primary orbicularis oris problem.
