Description
Running obliquely from the zygomatic bone to the lateral oral commissure, the zygomaticus major is presented in anterior view as a superficial cheek muscle with a clear tendinous convergence toward the modiolus. Its fibers course inferomedially from the region of the zygomatic arch, crossing superficial to the buccinator and lying anterior to the masseter along the lateral face. Adjacent bony landmarks include the infraorbital margin and maxilla superiorly and the maxillary dentition inferiorly. A simple vector. Clinical and teaching value comes from seeing the zygomaticus major in the same frame as the zygomatic arch and oral aperture, since that relationship explains how elevation and lateral traction of the mouth corner produces the classic smile. Facial nerve anatomy sits just beneath the surface conceptually, the zygomatic and buccal branches of the parotid plexus commonly supply this muscle, so it becomes a practical reference point when discussing iatrogenic weakness after parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy), or local trauma. Botulinum toxin injection planning also depends on distinguishing this muscle from the masseter and from more medial elevators such as levator labii superioris, because misplacement can flatten the smile or create asymmetry.
