Description
Arising at the inferior-most extent of the left ventricular apex, the incisura apicis cordis is presented from an anterior perspective as a small terminal notch interrupting the otherwise smooth contour of the cardiac apex. Superior to this indentation, the anterior surface is dominated by the sternocostal aspect of the right ventricle, while the left ventricle forms the left lateral border as it converges toward the apex. The apex itself lies inferolateral relative to the base of the heart and projects leftward, where this notch is typically appreciated at the distal tip of the left ventricle. A subtle landmark. For teaching surface anatomy and correlating imaging, this anterior view helps anchor the concept that the palpable apical impulse corresponds to the left ventricular apex rather than the right ventricle, and that small contour features can guide orientation when the heart is rotated.
