Description
Arising from the right ventricular outflow tract (infundibulum), the pulmonary trunk is opened in an anterior sectional perspective to expose the luminal contour immediately superior to the pulmonary valve. Just above the semilunar cusps, a smooth muscular ridge, the crista supravalvularis (supravalvular ridge), projects into the lumen and forms a subtle transition between the conus arteriosus and the more elastic arterial wall. The ridge sits anterior to the valve plane and, in this cut, reads as a circumferential crest that is superior to the commissures and continuous with the proximal trunk. Orientation matters here because small changes in outflow tract geometry can have large hemodynamic consequences. This supravalvular ridge is a practical landmark when teaching the infundibulum-to-trunk junction and when discussing right ventricular outflow tract obstruction patterns, including postoperative or congenital narrowing near the valvar and supravalvar levels. It also helps clarify why catheter or surgical descriptions distinguish valvular pulmonary stenosis from supravalvular lesions, and where turbulence and jet impingement may develop relative to the cusps. Use this artwork in cardiothoracic anatomy teaching, congenital heart disease modules, and operative atlases that describe pulmonary valve exposure and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction (for example, transannular patching where the incision traverses the infundibulum and approaches the proximal pulmonary trunk).
