Description
Anteriorly, the left auricle (auricula sinistra) projects as a muscular, ear shaped appendage from the superior aspect of the left atrium, overlapping the root of the pulmonary trunk and lying just lateral to the ascending aorta. Its trabeculated pectinate muscle ridges occupy the auricular wall, contrasting with the smoother atrial body that sits posterior and slightly superior to the atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus. Along the inferior margin, the left auricle approaches the left ventricle near the anterior interventricular sulcus. Small but unmistakable. Clinical work often treats the left auricle as more than a surface landmark because it is the dominant site of thrombus formation in atrial fibrillation and a frequent target for left atrial appendage occlusion devices. From an anterior surface view, you can orient the appendage relative to the great vessels and anticipate procedural corridors used in cardiac surgery and interventional electrophysiology, where pericardial reflection and proximity to the pulmonary artery matter for access and device positioning. This angle also supports teaching the distinction between true atrial chamber and appendage anatomy, which can be blurred on echocardiography and CT without a solid 3D mental model. Cardiac anatomy courses, cardiothoracic surgery atlases, and interventional cardiology training manuals can use this plate to anchor discussions of atrial appendage morphology, thromboembolic stroke risk, and the surface relationships that guide exposure during sternotomy or minimally invasive approaches.
