Arising from the superolateral aspect of the left atrium, the left auricle (left atrial appendage, auricula sinistra) projects anteriorly and slightly superiorly, forming a narrow, ear-like pouch with a tapered tip. From a left lateral profile, its free margin sits anterior to the left pulmonary veins and drapes toward the atrioventricular groove, with the pulmonary trunk and left ventricle expected to lie more anterior and inferior in the same silhouette. The ostium of the appendage opens medially into the left atrium, while the distal body curves laterally, creating the characteristic contour used as a surface landmark in cardiac anatomy teaching. Orientation is driven by its relationship to adjacent great vessels. Shape matters.
