Description
Centered on the anterior orbit, the orbital septum is presented as a fibrous sheet spanning from the orbital rim into the upper and lower eyelids, forming the anterior boundary of the orbital contents. Superiorly it blends with the periosteum at the supraorbital margin of the frontal bone and continues inferiorly to the infraorbital rim of the maxilla, lying deep to the orbicularis oculi and superficial to the orbital fat. Medially, the septum approaches the region of the anterior lacrimal crest and lacrimal fossa, while laterally it aligns with the lateral orbital rim and the lateral palpebral structures. Bony context includes the frontal bone, nasal bones, zygomatic bones, maxilla, and mandible, with dentition rendered for orientation. Clinically, the orbital septum is the line that separates preseptal from postseptal infection, so an accurate anterior view helps you teach why eyelid erythema in preseptal cellulitis differs in urgency from orbital cellulitis with pain on eye movement and proptosis. Surgeons also treat the septum as a landmark in upper and lower blepharoplasty, where violating the septum changes exposure of preaponeurotic fat and influences postoperative lid contour. A barrier.
