Description
Viewed from a caudal (inferior) perspective, the anterior (diaphragmatic) surface of the adult male liver is presented in relation to the adjoining inferior visceral surfaces that turn onto the undersurface. The right lobe occupies the patient’s right and lateral aspect, while the left lobe tapers toward the left and medial side, with the inferior margin forming the sharp anterior border between the anterior surface and the visceral face. Parenchyma contours imply the hepatic convexity superiorly against the diaphragm, then sweep inferiorly toward the region of the porta hepatis and fissures that separate functional territories. Orientation to the anterior and inferior liver surfaces matters when you are correlating physical anatomy with operative and imaging windows that approach the upper abdomen from below, including laparoscopy and subcostal ultrasound. The caudal view helps clarify why lesions along the anterior segments of the right hepatic lobe (Couinaud V and VIII) can appear deceptively close to the inferior margin, and why subcapsular hematomas or peritoneal implants may track along that curvature. A clean mental map of the anterior border also supports interpretation of hepatomegaly, where the inferior edge descends below the costal margin and changes the expected relationship to adjacent viscera.
