Description
Chaetomium microscopic morphology is represented at high magnification with emphasis on reproductive structures typical of an ascomycete. Expect to see globose to ovoid perithecia (ascomata) as the dominant elements, with a dense investment of dark, hair-like setae projecting outward from the perithecial wall and giving the genus its characteristic “bristly” silhouette. Within and adjacent to the perithecia, asci and released ascospores would be positioned centrally, while surrounding hyphae form a looser mycelial background. Scale and texture read as laboratory microscopy rather than gross colony morphology. Diagnostic landmarks. Perithecial architecture matters because Chaetomium species are frequent environmental isolates in damp buildings and a recurring source of confusion in routine mycology when compared with other perithecial ascomycetes. The presence of ostiolate perithecia with conspicuous setae, coupled with ascospore morphology (often limoniform in many species), supports genus-level identification when culture plates show non-specific, cottony growth. In indoor air and surface sampling, you often need these structures to separate Chaetomium from look-alikes and to interpret potential contamination versus clinically relevant recovery, including rare opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts.
