Description
Anteriorly oriented, the right lung is rendered in a frontal profile with the superior lobe dominant and the apical segment (segmentum apicale, S1) picked out in color near the apex above the level of the horizontal fissure. Medially, the contour approaches the mediastinal surface where the hilum would lie, while laterally the convex costal surface sweeps toward the midaxillary line. Inferiorly, the superior lobe transitions toward the oblique fissure that separates it from the middle and inferior lobes. Emphasizing the apical segment matters because S1 has a distinct segmental bronchus (B1) and pulmonary arterial supply (A1), and those relationships guide both bronchoscopic orientation and segment-preserving resections. Apical disease is not academic: post-primary tuberculosis and apical bullous emphysema often favor the lung apex, and a Pancoast tumor at the superior sulcus can abut the pleura and neurovascular structures while appearing to arise from the apical parenchyma. Clear segmental localization supports radiology readouts, preoperative planning for VATS or robotic apical segmentectomy, and teaching why an “upper lobe lesion” is not always a lobectomy problem. Pulmonary anatomy courses and thoracic surgery atlases use this sort of color-separated segment map to pair bronchopulmonary segments with fissure anatomy and surface landmarks in the anterior chest. It also fits radiology teaching files when correlating segmental terminology to CT or bronchoscopy reports, where specifying S1 helps standardize communication across teams.
