Description
Centered in the female pelvis, the urinary bladder is presented with emphasis on its fundus (base), the broad posterior surface oriented toward the vagina and cervix while the apex projects anteriorly toward the pubic symphysis. The ureters enter the posterolateral bladder wall obliquely, converging toward the interureteric ridge, and the internal urethral orifice lies inferiorly at the bladder neck. Superior to the fundus, peritoneal reflections over the dome transition into the vesicouterine pouch, and the trigone occupies the smooth posteroinferior floor between the ureteric orifices and urethra. Orientation is clear. This posterior-inferior bladder anatomy matters because the fundus and trigone define the surgical and endoscopic landmarks used in cystoscopy and ureteric stent placement, where the ureteric orifices must be identified without injuring the interureteric ridge or bladder neck. In women, the close relationship of the fundus to the anterior vaginal wall and cervix frames common clinical problems such as vesicovaginal fistula after pelvic surgery and stress urinary incontinence when support of the bladder neck and proximal urethra fails. Use this depiction in pelvic anatomy teaching for medical and nursing curricula, urogynaecology and urology training materials, and publisher figures discussing cystocele, fistula repair, or transvaginal surgical approaches near the bladder base and ureteric tunnels.
