Description

Situated in the anterior pelvis, the adult female urinary bladder is shown with attention to the fundus (base), the posteroinferior surface that faces the anterior vaginal wall and cervix. The trigone occupies the internal aspect of this region, bounded superolaterally by the ureteric orifices and tapering inferiorly toward the internal urethral orifice at the bladder neck. Posteriorly, the peritoneal reflection across the superior surface relates to the uterovesical pouch, while the anterior bladder wall lies deep to the pubic symphysis within the retropubic space. Focusing on the bladder fundus matters because this is where ureteric entry, trigonal smooth muscle, and continence-related anatomy intersect, and small spatial errors can confuse learners and mislead clinical communication. Ureteric obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, and ureteric injury during hysterectomy or pelvic surgery all relate to the course of the distal ureter as it approaches the posterolateral bladder and traverses the intramural segment before opening into the trigone. It is also the region targeted when describing cystoscopic landmarks, including trigonal inflammation in interstitial cystitis or edema around the ureteric orifices. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and pelvic anatomy teaching, urology and urogynecology texts, and surgical counseling materials that need a clear correlation between the female bladder base, trigone, and adjacent reproductive organs. It also supports radiology and endoscopy lectures that translate surface anatomy into cystoscopic orientation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
