Description

Prominent at the posterior aspect of the bladder neck, the uvula vesicae appears as a midline mucosal elevation projecting into the vesical lumen just superior to the internal urethral orifice. The trigone (trigonum vesicae) forms a smooth triangular field inferiorly, bounded superolaterally by the ureteric orifices and tapering toward the urethra, while the surrounding rugae of the bladder body become more apparent as you move superiorly. Inferior continuity into the proximal female urethra can be inferred at the bladder outlet, with the uvula lying medial to the ureteric orifices and immediately anterior to the region where the ureters traverse the bladder wall. In the adult female, the uvula vesicae is less pronounced than in many male bladders, so an isolated, well-defined uvular fold becomes a useful teaching point when discussing normal variation versus pathology at the bladder neck. Cystoscopy and transurethral procedures rely on accurate orientation to the trigone and internal urethral meatus, and a prominent mucosal ridge in this location can be mistaken for an inflammatory mound, postsurgical change, or a small intraluminal lesion if its anatomy is not recognized. Small structure, common source of confusion. Medical educators can place this illustration into lower urinary tract modules for gross anatomy, urology, and pelvic floor teaching, pairing it with endoscopic views of the bladder neck to reinforce landmarks used during cystoscopic navigation. Publishers will also find it suitable for atlas plates or review articles addressing female lower urinary tract anatomy, bladder outlet symptoms, or operative descriptions involving the trigone and bladder neck. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
