Description
Viewed from within the female urinary bladder, the trigone forms a smooth triangular field on the posteroinferior wall, bounded superolaterally by the right and left ureteric orifices and tapering inferiorly toward the internal urethral orifice. At the bladder neck, a small midline elevation, the uvula vesicae, projects into the lumen just superior to the urethral opening. The interureteric ridge (bar of Mercier) spans between the ureteric orifices, with the bladder body extending superiorly above the trigone. This endoluminal perspective matters when teaching why the trigone behaves differently from the rest of the bladder wall: it remains relatively fixed as the detrusor expands and is a common site for referred pain and mucosal sensitivity. The uvula vesicae is often discussed in the context of bladder outlet anatomy; in women it is usually subtle, but it becomes a useful landmark during cystoscopy when orienting to the bladder neck and evaluating conditions such as bladder neck obstruction, postoperative scarring, or inflammatory change near the internal urethral orifice.
