Viewed under colored scanning electron microscopy, the acarus (dust mite) is presented as an oval-bodied arachnid with the gnathosoma positioned anteriorly and the idiosoma forming the larger posterior mass. Four pairs of jointed legs project from the ventrolateral margins, each composed of proximal segments (coxa and trochanter region) continuing distally into elongate podomeres that terminate in small pretarsal elements adapted for gripping. Dense cuticular setae arise across the dorsal and lateral surfaces, giving the idiosoma a shaggy contour. Scale matters here. Surface morphology at this magnification ties directly to allergen biology and environmental persistence. In house dust mites such as Dermatophagoides spp., the setae, cuticular microtexture, and terminal leg structures help explain how these mites cling to textile fibers and bedding, resist displacement, and thrive in humid microclimates, conditions that correlate with exposure to fecal pellets and major allergens (for example Der p 1).
