Rendered as a filamentous Ebola virus (EBOV) virion, the particle appears as a looping tubular filament consistent with filovirus morphology. Surface spikes corresponding to the viral glycoprotein (GP) project radially from the envelope, creating a studded contour along the entire length of the virion. Beneath the envelope, you would logically infer the matrix layer (VP40) lining the inner surface, with the helical nucleocapsid core deeper and centrally placed along the long axis of the filament. Loops and bends emphasize the pleomorphic, threadlike form rather than a rigid icosahedral symmetry. GP is the business end of this pathogen. Its dense surface distribution relates directly to attachment and entry, including receptor engagement and macropinocytosis, followed by endosomal processing that permits membrane fusion, concepts that come up repeatedly when teaching why antibody neutralization can succeed or fail in Ebola virus disease.
