Description
Filamentous Ebola virus virion is rendered as a looping, tubular particle with a lipid envelope studded by trimeric surface glycoprotein (GP) spikes, visualized as yellow to light green nodules projecting radially from the pink envelope. Beneath the envelope, you would infer the matrix layer (largely VP40) conforming to the virion’s curvature, with the helical nucleocapsid core (NP with VP35, VP30, and the L polymerase complex) occupying the central axis of the filament. Curvature and diameter remain fairly uniform along the length, consistent with filoviruses that form long filaments which can fold back on themselves into U-shapes and loops. Scale matters. GP is the contact surface for host entry, binding attachment factors and enabling endosomal fusion after proteolytic priming, so the density and distribution of spikes are more than decoration in a teaching figure. This exterior view also reinforces why Ebola is sensitive to detergents and alcohol-based disinfectants: the infectious particle depends on its lipid envelope, and disruption of that membrane collapses entry competence. For pathogenesis discussions, the virion’s filamentous morphology helps explain how budding from the plasma membrane can generate pleomorphic particles and high particle-to-infectivity ratios, a recurring point when interpreting viral load assays and antigen detection in outbreak settings.
