Description

Anteriorly and posteriorly, the uterine body (corpus uteri) is presented as a thick-walled, muscular organ superior to the cervix and inferior to the fundus, with its lateral margins tapering toward the uterine cornua where the uterine tubes would connect. The myometrium forms the bulk of the wall, encasing the central uterine cavity, while the endometrium lines that cavity as a distinct inner layer. Superiorly, the serosal surface (perimetrium) would continue from the uterine body onto the fundus and reflect onto adjacent pelvic peritoneum. Midline anatomy. Seeing the uterine body as a layered structure matters when you are teaching or planning care around the cyclic endometrial changes that underlie abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility evaluation, and early pregnancy complications. The myometrium is the operative substrate in fibroids (leiomyomata) and adenomyosis, and its thickness and contour relate directly to bleeding patterns and uterine enlargement. A clean external rendering of the corpus uteri also supports discussions of uterine orientation (anteversion and anteflexion) and how that changes what you expect on pelvic ultrasound or during bimanual examination. Use this asset in gross anatomy and reproductive physiology coursework to anchor the terminology of uterus, uterine body, and uterine cavity without distraction from adjacent adnexa. It also fits obstetrics and gynecology slide decks, patient education handouts on fibroids and hysteroscopic procedures, and editorial illustrations comparing normal uterine wall architecture with pathology in the endometrium or myometrium.
