Description
Anteriorly positioned in the female pelvis, the uterine body (corpus uteri) appears as the thick-walled, muscular segment between the superior fundus and the inferior isthmus that narrows toward the cervix. Superior continuity with the uterine fundus creates the domed contour at the apex, while the lateral borders form the uterine cornua where the uterine tubes would originate. Broadly, the uterine cavity lies centrally within the myometrium, with the endometrial lining implied by the cavity’s internal contour even when the mucosa is not individually rendered. For teaching and clinical correlation, the uterine body matters because it is the primary site of leiomyomas (fibroids), adenomyosis, and most endometrial carcinomas, all of which alter corpus size, contour, and the configuration of the uterine cavity. Its relationship to the cervix at the isthmus also frames obstetric concepts such as lower uterine segment formation and the typical location of transverse hysterotomy during cesarean delivery, where thickness and vascularity differ from the fundal myometrium.
