Description
Crista galli rises in the midline of the ethmoid bone, with the paired alae cristae galli projecting laterally like short wings at its base. From a frontal (anterior) viewpoint, the alae sit immediately lateral to the vertical ridge of the crista galli and superior to the cribriform plate, framing the midline where the falx cerebri attaches. The cribriform plate extends horizontally on either side, its perforations implied by the region adjacent to the alae, while the ethmoidal labyrinth lies farther laterally and posteriorly beyond the plate margins. Orientation is strict and architectural. These relationships matter in anterior skull base work because the crista galli and cribriform plate form a thin bony interface between the anterior cranial fossa and the nasal cavity, and fractures here are a classic source of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and post-traumatic anosmia from disruption of olfactory fila.
