Description
Arcing along the inferolateral margin of the gaster (ventriculus), the greater curvature forms the long convex border extending from the cardiac region near the fundus down toward the pyloric antrum. In anterior orientation, the fundus lies superior and to the left of midline, while the body of the stomach sweeps inferiorly before turning medially toward the pylorus on the right. Along this border you would expect the attachment of the greater omentum, with the gastrocolic ligament draping inferiorly from the curvature. A long, readable contour. This anterior view matters because the greater curvature is the principal surface landmark for the gastroepiploic (gastro-omental) arterial arcade, a route that becomes clinically relevant during distal gastrectomy, omentectomy, and control of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopists and surgeons also use the curvature to orient lesions and resections, since ulcers and early gastric cancers are often described relative to the lesser versus greater curvature and the antrum versus body. When the stomach rotates or distends, the greater curvature is the first border to exaggerate, a teaching point for gastric volvulus patterns and for interpreting the stomach’s outline on contrast studies. Use this illustration in preclinical abdominal anatomy blocks when introducing peritoneal reflections, or in surgical education materials discussing the greater omentum, gastrocolic entry to the lesser sac, and preservation or ligation of the right and left gastroepiploic vessels.
