Description
Anterior facial surface anatomy centers on the adult male external nose (nasus externus) with its dorsum nasi rising superiorly from the radix at the nasion toward the apex nasi, then descending into the columella between the nares. Laterally, the alae nasi bound the external nasal apertures and blend into the nasolabial region, while the nasolabial sulcus runs inferolaterally toward the upper lip (labium superius) and philtrum. Superior and slightly lateral to the dorsum, the illustration implies the nasal root’s relationship to the lower forehead and glabellar region. Surface landmarks of the nasal region matter because they guide both examination and intervention before you ever reach cartilage or bone. Alignment and contour at the dorsum and tip often change after nasal bone fracture, septal hematoma, or rhinoplasty, and subtle asymmetry of the alae can suggest prior trauma or congenital deformity. The columella, alar margins, and nasolabial junction also define the typical incision placement and scar behavior in open rhinoplasty and alar base reduction. Small distances here. Big cosmetic consequences. Use this artwork for gross anatomy labs, head and neck surface anatomy teaching, and introductory ENT or facial plastics lectures where you need consistent terminology for the external nasal subunits. It also fits clinical skills manuals covering inspection of the nose and perinasal soft tissues, and patient education pieces explaining where swelling, bruising, or sutures sit relative to the upper lip and forehead.
