Description

Frontal inspection of the male external nose brings the dorsum nasi (bridge) into alignment above the apex nasi (tip), with the paired alae nasi forming the lateral margins of the nares. The columella sits in the midline, separating the right and left nostrils and continuing superiorly as the soft-tissue triangle into the nasal tip complex. Superiorly, the nasal root transitions toward the glabella, while the alar-facial grooves define the boundary between the ala and the adjacent cheek. Symmetry and surface landmarks dominate this view. This anterior perspective is the workhorse for documenting nasal form before and after intervention, because it best reveals deviations of the nasal dorsum, alar collapse, and nostril asymmetry that can be subtle on profile images. Preoperative rhinoplasty planning often references the relationship between the dorsum, tip, and alar rims, and clinicians commonly correlate external findings with septal deviation, nasal valve compromise, or alar rim retraction on internal exam. It also supports bedside evaluation after trauma when swelling can mask contour changes. Small changes matter. Use this illustration for head and neck anatomy teaching blocks, facial plastic surgery and ENT course materials, and patient-facing consent documents that need accurate surface anatomy terminology without internal dissection detail. It also fits well in dermatology and maxillofacial references discussing lesions or fractures mapped to external nasal subunits. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
