Description
Curving along the inferolateral margin of the external nose, the ala nasi forms the mobile “wing” that bounds the lateral wall of the naris and frames the nasal vestibule. Superiorly, the alar rim approaches the dome of the nasal tip, while posteriorly it blends into the alar base at the alar-facial junction adjacent to the nasolabial sulcus. Medially, the alar contour relates to the columella and the membranous septum, defining the shape of the nostril aperture in frontal and basal relationships. Small surface changes here matter in practice because the alar lobule and alar rim directly influence nasal valve geometry and, by extension, airflow resistance. Alar collapse is a common contributor to obstruction after rhinoplasty or with age-related weakening of the lower lateral cartilage and surrounding soft tissue, and external valve compromise often presents as inspiratory narrowing at the nostril margin. This region also drives aesthetic analysis in functional and cosmetic nasal surgery, where symmetry of the alar base, nostril axis, and alar flare guides maneuvers such as alar base reduction, rim grafting, and correction of external nasal valve insufficiency.
